How hard it has been to grow The Mechanical Mum.

Looking back at where the idea and implementation of The Mechanical Mum has come from, where it stands now is vastly different. In the last three years that I have been writing this blog a lot has changed. The difference primarily is that I have joined a whole lot of different social media platforms in an attempt to grow it as much as I can as quickly as I can. This has proven more challenging than I had anticipated.

On the surface, when you are searching social media such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, it looks like its effortless to become an influencer and “go viral”. However the reality is it is so much harder, if it was easy everyone would do it. This is a lesson that I have had to learn the hard way. Every new follower that I have received has been hard fought for. The first mistake I made was not having a clear strategy for my posts. OlsenMetrix.com explains that an effective strategy will direct you to the right social media platform and create content that is targeted to your audience which in turn will increase engagement from the post (OlsenMetrix 2023). By not setting out a structured plan, my posts have been random and not directed at a specific audience. I believe this has impacted the results I have seen. On Facebook and Instagram, new follower have not been a problem, however getting people to watch the videos from start to finish and then comment has been hard.

The other problem I have is the time it takes to create content. Our workshop is busy so getting space and quiet during working hours is almost impossible. This means that we have to film on the weekends, which is challenging if we don’t have the right cars in the workshop over the weekend. To make sure content that I create is effective, Ariana Sheehan from ClearVoice suggests using three questions, who is your audience, how will you reach your audience and how will you engage your audience? (Sheehan, A 2023).

So from now on, I am going to sit down and make a seasonal plan of what I want to talk about, making sure it is relevant to the season and time of year we are in, and then direct it towards the exact customer we are targeting. Hopefully this will lead to greater engagement and more followers with less effort.

What challenges have you faced when deciding on content to be created?

Have you found any techniques that help with content creation?

I would love any help and advise you have have, so drop me a line.

Safe driving

Hi my name is Gabbi Schneider and I am The Mechanical Mum. I started The Mechanical Mum back in 2019 after working in our family motor mechanical workshop and hearing from our customers just how little they new about cars and the importance of regular maintenance. It started off as a blog directed to women like me and has progressed now to a Vlog and a YouTube channel. The aim remains the same, to educate, and thus empower women and men alike to understand what their vehicle needs to maintain optimal safety and function. I would love for your collaboration in my journey to educate the average person on an industry I have been working in for the last 8 years.
